Site Description:
The intersection of Ager and Hamilton Street lies in Ward 5. Ager Road is a heavily trafficked Maryland state road that runs north-south between East West Highway and Queens Chapel Road. It is used by commuters and provides access to the West Hyattsville metro station.

Hamilton Street runs between the West Hyattsville Metro station, just west of Ager Rd, and 42nd Avenue in the heart of the Hyattsville historic district. The western end of of the road includes a number of commercial establishments, including the Aldi grocery store. It is used for access to the metro station and stores. To the east, it is used for access to the Safeway, Magruder park, and via side streets, to Route 1. There is heavy pedestrian traffic going to and from the shops and metro station.

There is a walk signal light at this intersection, but it must be activated by pushing a button (if the button is not pushed, the walk light is not activated, and the green light does not always last long enough to allow a pedestrian to safely clear the intersection). The button on the northeast side of the intersection is located on a traffic island, and it is difficult to access due to it's location and the adjacent plantings.

Councilmember Paula Perry tried to get SHA to consider adding a left on green arrow and right red turn arrow from Hamilton onto Ager. SHA's response was that it would back up traffic on Hamilton too much.

Reccomendations:
  • Move walk light activation button off the island or add another one? to the northeast side of the intersection.
  • Add a left on green arrow and a red right turn arrow going from Hamilton onto Ager Rd.

Jurisdictions:
Ager Road - Maryland State Highway Administration

2004 - 1 injury accident
2005 - none
