Some folks love Aldi, some folks don't and some folks are in between. Regardless, I thought I would share my list of certain items I've found to be of comparable/acceptable quality at Aldi's and at considerably lower prices.

DAIRY
  • sharp cheddar cheese -- brick (happy farms I think)
  • Sharp cheddar cheese --shredded
  • grated cheese (Imke)
  • mozzarella (irene)
  • the Fit & Active organic soy milk (stuart)
  • butter (stuart)
  • cream cheese (stuart)
  • neufchatel cream cheese
  • whipped yogurts -- (put them in the kids lunches, and got no complaints compared to say yoplait whipped yogurts, which are at least 15 cents more per container)

  • grapes
  • blueberries (flawn said they looked decent)
  • bananas (irene)
  • sweet-tasting celery (stuart)
  • If the veggies are freshly stocked we'll get the broccoli & cauliflower.(stuart)
FROZEN FOODS
  • frozen waffles
  • frozen french toast sticks
  • frozen vegetables (irene)
  • frozen beef fajita mix (MacNachtan: wasn't bad for a fast meal, and really not that bad for you. )
  • frozen ready made appetizers (Krista)
  • frozen "Turkey Mignons wrapped in bacon" (Krista)
  • fruit filled frozen pastries (Krista)
  • fancy ice cream cakes. (Krista)
  • bags of individually frozen chicken tenders (Krista)
  • frozen fruit. (Krista)
  • cornish hens for $2 apiece. (Mary: So easy to clean and bake for 50 minutes, then voila.)
  • frozen chicken nuggets (Rebecca)
  • frozen mini pizzas(Rebecca)
BREAKFAST (INCLUDING COFFEE)
  • Mill Valley oat and honey granola bars (daughter and I did a taste test of Aldi's ($1.89/12 bars) versus Nature Valley ($2.99/12 bars) crunchy granola bars -- we thought they were identical. and $1.10 cheaper per box)
  • good German roasted coffee (Imke)
  • actual Post Grape Nuts (they're well hidden)(stuart)
  • off-brandpseudo-generic cereal types like the cheerios & rice krispies (stuart)

    • individual fruit cups (mandarin oranges -- the aldi's ones actually are slightly lower in sugar/calories than the dole fruit cups, and are helluva lot cheaper. MacNachtan also a fan of the fruit cups)
    • fit and active mini cheddar cheese rice cakes
    • fit and active blue corn tortilla chips
    • salsa (refrigerated section -- Mary seconds this)
    • fit & active Dried tart cherries, 8 oz bag. (flawn says they are identical to trader joe's)
    • pretzel chips (MacNachtan: are pretty tasty and a good substitute for potato chips.)
    • trail mix (MacNachtan: I think there are a few varieties.)
    • graham crackers (MacNachtan + Krista)
    • pizelles (MacNachtan)
    • fit & active wheat crackers
    • Animal Crackers (Krista)
    • freeze dried fruit(Roberta)
    • dried apricots (Krista)
    • dried fruit (without added sugars) (Imke)cherries, cranberries, apricots, blueberries (stuart)
    • Fig newton type fruit bars (Krista)
    • artichoke and mushroom or sun dried tomato and salsa "cheese circles" (Krista)
    • nuts in general: pistaccios; sliced or slivered almonds., nut mix with shells (seasonal) (Imke); almonds, cashews, peanuts (Mary says for 1/3 of the price of Giant-Way) pecans, almonds, walnuts(stuart)
    • chocolate (Imke declares it far too good " I could swear they sell the excellent Swiss chocolate "Lindt" under a different label" says it's seasonal -- i.e. easter bunnies in early spring, etc.)

    The pretzel chips are pretty tasty and a good substitute for potato chips.
    I also enjoy there trail mix I think there are a few varieties.
    There is a frozen beef fajita mix that wasn't bad for a fast meal, and really not that bad for you.
    We also get the fruit cups, graham crackers, pizelles, and a few other odds and ends.
