About Us:
Hyattsville Bikers Unite! - My Hyattsville Hyattsville Bikers Unite was formed in the late summer of 2005 when a group of involved citizens and local bicycling enthusiasts got together to discuss ideas about how to improve facilities for biking and walking in the City of Hyattsville. HBU is dedicated to providing information and sharing ideas about bicycling in the City of Hyattsville and surrounding communities with a special focus on safety, access, trails, exercise and fun. In November of 2006, Hyattsville Bikers Unite became an official city committee...the Bike and Pedestrian Safety Committee, read the resolution and check out our meeting minutes.

The Report:
We have recently completed a report for the city council which encapsulates our recommendations for a more bike and ped friendly city. The report is the result of almost two years worth of work involving field surveys, community meetings, your suggestions, and work with city representatives. The initiatives and infrastructure improvements outlined in the document will be going before your city council member soon, to be adopted as a bike and ped masterplan. Please contact your city council member and support our suggestions. This wiki environment played a major role in the generation of the report, functioning as a work space for all of the collaborators on the project. As the report is now complete, many of the old HBU wiki pages are replicated in the final report and have been moved into our "Archive" section. One of our major goals is to get the City of Hyattsville’s certification as a "Bicycle Friendly Community". Passage of a bike and pedestrian master plan is the first major step in achieving that goal!

BeanSoda Bike/Ped Problem areas 2 May 3 2008, 3:38 PM EDT by Anonymous

Two friends told me about problems they have noticed:

1. I find crossing Queens Chapel where it intersects with Queensbury to be extremely nerve wracking...you know where the volunteer fire dept. and the Baptist and Lutheran churches are? It doesn't seem like the pedestrian walk signal is long enough to cross that broad expanse of street. I also don't like that there isn't a cross walk on both sides, just the side opposite the fire station. I think that is a state road, but still part of H-ville!

2. The sidewalk problem is a low, brick house at the intersection of Oglethorpe and 41st Avenue (no address on the house, as far as I could see). You can't stay on the sidewalk because of a tree and bushy overgrowth.

Hi everyone,
The weather forecast isn't that bad, really...High 47°F
I will be leading this TFK ( http://www.tfkmetrodc.org/ )ride from Magruder Park at 11am. The ride will be about 10 miles long and we anticipate a return in between 1and 2pm, depending on the skills of the riders. The ride will take us around Lake Artemisia and back.
To participate, your kid needs a bike, a helmet, a bottle of water and appropriate clothing (layers, no loose clothing - especially no lose pants). It is recommenced to bring a small/light backpack to carry extra clothing.
I will provide a snack for energy management.
If you do not have a bike or helmet, please let me know ASAP, so we can plan accordingly.
Unless you have been on a ride with me in the past and you already turned one in, you will need to have a release form filled out (attached). Please make sure to bring it along on Saturday.
Parents are welcome to join as chaperons, but it is not necessary.
Please RSVP asap, so we can plan accordingly.

Hey Jim et al--
Just wondering what your thoughts are about the safety of bikers in Hyattsville. The other day I was driving down Queensbury and saw a biker on the (correct) side of the street, but into the path of traffic. There were no cars approaching, but I don't know where this biker would've escaped to had a car suddenly turned onto the (newly paved, great for biking) street.

Also, I then turned onto Baltimore Ave. and was driving along and almost got clipped on my right side by another car. It turns out that car was swerving into my lane to avoid hitting a cyclist on the right side of the road (heading toward City Hall) who was riding out a piece from the curb. No fault to the cyclist, it's hard to ride hugging the curb b/c you can hit it and flip out into the street.

I'm a biker and often cycle in the streets back home in Niagara Falls. I'm just curious about your ideas for creating bike lanes and safer areas for cyclists -- especially since areas like Queensbury were just redone -- and drivers alike.
