Low-Use Pedestrian Routes

Other Sidewalks Throughout Town

DESCRIPTION:
Most other sidewalks within the city limits fall under what we would term the low-use category. There may be, however, other routes where increased lighting, widened paths, etc. may be a concern. We invite citizens feedback via the comments form below.

SIDEWALK REPAVING PRIORITY:
LOW

RECOMMENDATIONS:
  • As stated previously, for most routes through town, we recommend that the city only refresh the current 4 ft. sidewalks and retain current setbacks and green space. They should be replaced as currently called for by the city repaving plan.
  • Sidewalk reconstruction should take into account existing plantings (tree and otherwise) and fire hydrants, utility poles, posts, and other obstructions. Often one side of the street will carry most obstructions. The less obstructed side of the street should be favored for any new sidewalk construction as the resulting path will actually be usable.
  • All new developments should have sidewalks at the PG County standard of 6 usable feet width with 8 ft. preferred.
  • We would like to see improved street markings for marked connector lanes/crosswalks in those areas where sidewalks may go from being present on both sides of the street, to only being present on one side.
  • Impacts all Wards
