SITE DESCRIPTION

Queens Chapel Road is a wide heavily trafficked Maryland State Route, and major commuter route into Washington, DC (it turns into Michigan Ave. at the District line). There is a sidewalk on the west side of Queens Chapel running north from Ager Rd. to Hamilton Street. There are no sidewalks on the east side of Queens Chapel between Hamilton Street and the NW branch, nor is there a sidewalk on the west side of Queens Chapel between Ager and the NW branch.

Ager Rd. is also a heavily trafficed state road, which runs north-south between East-West highway and Queens Chapel. It is also heavily used by communters, and is used for access to the West Hyattsville metro station. Ager ends at Queens Chapel Rd, where southbound traffic merges onto Queens Chapel without a light. Though there are signs along Ager warning of crossing pedestrians and suggesting a 25mph speed, these signs don't seem to have much impact on the very high speed traffic. If pedestrians attempt to walk north from the Northwest Branch trail along the west side of Queens Chapel, there is no sidewalk, and the high speed traffic coming off of Ager is coming around a blind curve into the intersection, and cannot see pedestrians attempting to cross Ager until almost upon them. After crossing the lane where traffic is coming off of Ager onto Queens Chapel at high speed without a light, pedestrians must then cross the lane where traffic from northbound Queens Chapel is turning onto Ager. Here at least, there is a light, but it is not visible to pedestrians, and there is no walk/don’t walk light, so northbound pedestrians are forced to guess, based on what cars are doing, whether the light is red.

The Northwest branch trail crosses Queens Chapel Rd just south of this intersection. As noted above, traffic coming south on Ager merges onto Queens Chapel, often at high speed. Because of the location of this intersection, p
edestrians and cyclists crossing Queens Chapel on the NW Branch trail must be aware of two streams of merging traffic coming from the north. Often, drivers are more focused on successfully merging than on pedestrians and cyclists crossing.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Add a walk/don't walk light to the existing light for traffic turning from northbound Queens Chapel onto Ager
  • Add a blinker light, or some other additional caution for draffic coming off of Ager onto Queens Chapel
