Hyattsville Farmers Market
Jul 9 2008, 6:11 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 9 2008, 6:11 PM EDT
I visited this market on this past Tuesday, what a disappointment. I fully expected to do my produce shopping but there were only 3 produce vendors offering the same items at different prices. I saw only 3 fruits, blueberries, peaches, blackberries. I hope other vendors join and make this market a success. Do you find this valuable?

I went a few times the year before last and it was always disappointing, hot, dusty and noisy. I returned this year hoping things had improved but i too was disappointed on Tuesday. I'm not sure who manages it but I would love to see more vendors and the location changed as well. Do you find this valuable?

It's early in the season child. Be patient. Things have to grow....

For convenience here is the current location from this wiki as of date of post:
Maybe producers don't come because customers don't come, but probably very many
customers don't come because it doesn't stay open until 7:30 or 8pm...
Queens Chapel Town Center
Rear Parking Lot
(corner of Queens Chapel Road & Hamilton Street)
MAP!
Every Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until
6:00 p.m. through October

I think these markets have to be built by the mutual efforts of the growers and the consumers. I have supported the West Hyattsville Market since it was in the parking lot at PG Plaza and I've also supported the Riverdale Park market for six years. There are a couple of growers who attend both markets--Peggy Campanela and Avis Turner, both experienced growers who sell high quality produce. It might encourage some shoppers to hear that the Riverdale Park market used to be nearly as modest as the West Hyattsville market--I remember when it was five growers and that was it. Now it's a virtual medieval market fair! The WH hours could be extended easily if the growers thought there would be more business--and I don't think anyone is totally unwilling to change locations either. Really all they want to do is sell food, not pack it up another day older. Also I've gotten various growers to bring different things for me--simply by asking: artichokes, epazote, sour cherries. I hope you'll give our market another chance. If we continue to support them they'll support us.

One more detail--our Tuesday market has one grower who sells hard to find produce--epazote, squash blossoms, poblanos--stuff lovers of Mexican food are ecstatic to find. It's getting so Tuesday is Mexican night at our house!

Child, early in the season is not the subject matter here, its the lack of support and vendors. So if you think early in the season could be a reason, then what do you say for other markets that have many many vendors and customers, isn't it early in the season for them too, child.

I somewhat agree with you here. But there seems to be a good flow of traffic at the location especially because of the bank being there. But they have got to get more vendors to attract the customers. The few fruits and veggies I did purchase were very good. So I don't think its quality, its quantity.

Is there any interest in moving the market to a location across from the EYA sales office, right on Route 1 - at the site of the old Patriot Motors trailer? There's plenty of visibility and parking. Do you find this valuable?

Great!!!We in the immediate Route 1 (Life within Walking Distance) have little food selection so that would be a real boon to the community there.
The market would also get a lot of people, seriously, from Sudsville, the laundromat. Spanish people really love fresh produce. They are the main customers of Sudsville, which of course is next to the old Patriot site.
It would also help Cafe Azul & Book Nook so people would slow down to see what is in the area.

That would be a perfect location. Visibility is everything. So what needs to be done to get them relocated for the rest of the season.

I work for EYA and can facilitate the move over to Route 1. I'll just need a contact to discuss scheduling, signage, and such. I can be reached at 301-634-8667. Looking forward to it! Do you find this valuable?

I visited today in order to chat with the farmers about potentially moving to Route 1. The place was really hopping, with an amazing array of fruit, vegetables, fresh baked goods, hand-made soap, etc. I was really impressed. As an EYA staffer, I would love to see them move the market over to Arts District Hyattsville on Route 1, maybe next year. In the meantime, I am pleasantly surprised to see the current location working. Do you find this valuable?

This past Tuesday there was a baker at the West Hyattsville market--his first time I think. Three bucks a loaf--very reasonable and the whole wheat sourdough is excellent. Also I talked to one of the vendors and she told me she had to call home and have a second truck bring more food--they sold virtually everything. That said, I don't think they are interested in moving anywhere. The Route One might impinge on the Riverdale Park market, especially since they are only forty-eight hours apart. I can't help thinking that many of the patrons of the WH market are not going to weigh in online, possibly because they are not English speakers. Do you find this valuable?

And since we are discussing moving the Farmers Market to Route 1, how about also gauging interest in moving the day of the market to Saturday. Any thoughts from vendors or shoppers on doing a Saturday market? My work hours usually prevent me from making it to either the WH or RP markets, although I would love to go. When I lived in Arlington a couple years ago, I loved that the Arlington Farmers Market at the Courthouse metro was there on Saturdays. And there were always a ton of vendors and a ton of shoppers, thanks I think to the weekend hours. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
